Pakistani government’s anti-corruption NAB’s chief rejected a Supreme Court order to arrest the Prime Minister in corruption case, reasoning not having sufficient evidence.
The evidence in a graft case against Pak PM Raja Pervez Ashraf is weak and needed more time to determine whether the prime minister should be arrested, Fasih Bokhari, head of the National Accountability Bureau told the Supreme Court.
SC directed NAB to submit all records of the investigation against Ashraf.
Facilitating relief to Pakistan govt., Mr. Bokhari said, investigations of the allegations against Ashraf were incomplete, evidence were just on oral statements which are not warranted in the court of law, reports said.
NAB’s refusal irk SC which is already facing pressure from fiery cleric Muhammad Tahirul Qadri’s march protesting outside Parliament, raising the rage between the government and the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, after Qadri’s supporting thousands of protesters demanded the immediate resignation of the political leaders and electoral reforms, the court ordered the arrest of Mr. Ashraf in connection with alleged Rental Power Plants illegal transactions when he served as power minister.
The Prime Minister has denied the allegations which set the stage for a new round of political crisis in Pakistan.
