‘Amend Juvenile Justice Act: Reduce age of juvenility to 16’

As national outcry of a Delhi gang rape incident, Supreme Court issued a notice to Delhi govt regarding amendment of Juvenile Justice Act.

On basis of the petition filed by advocate Salil Bali, he appealed that to amend the Act to insert a provision.

He also said that the juvenile would be treated and kept separately and if found guilty he would be kept in a reformatory school/ borstal jail only maximum up to 3 years, source said.

Delhi Police said that they were in favor to over reducing the age of juvenility, following gang-rape of a paramedical student who later died in a Singapore hospital,  in which a minor was involved.

“The Delhi Police feels that the age of juvenile should be 16 years. This is our view. I understand there is already a bill pending (to be passed),” Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar told reporters.

The age of juvenile should be reducing from the present 18 to 16 years, he added.

Police claimed that it was the juvenile who enticed the woman and her male friend into the bus.

It has been said that Delhi police is sought permission from the juvenile justice board for an ossification test which will prove that whether the accused is a juvenile or not.
