While death of 6 infant in 6 hours during Thursday- Friday at Malda Sadar Hospital, aged between 1 and 70 days, there are next three more infant died at same Hospital on Saturday.
Now the death rate is going to nine in the past two days, three died in the hospital today, six other died last two days.
Superintendent of the hospital, Dr R R Samanta said, “Most of the babies were suffering from respiratory problems due to the severe cold wave sweeping the district. We tried our best to treat them, but could not.”
From November 8, 128 children died in this hospital out of them there were 15 infants.
And for baby’s safety, a Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) was inaugurated in the hospital this month.
But this unit has not given best result, the one reason of having les number of seats. At least 50 more babies in the newborn ward need treatment in SNCU immediately, but can’t be admitted. The hospital authorities have taken measures including a warmer on 24-hour basis at the neo-natal unit.
Although the hospital Doctors claimed that the babies death can be due to the difference in temperature between the mother’s womb and the outside atmosphere.
Talking to Media Doctor reported, “It is true that the SNCU helps the sick babies immensely. But the number of seats in the unit being only 12, most of the babies do not find place there.”
