Following successful launch of indigenously developed ‘Pinaka’ rockets, the government has granted to approve a Rs 1,500 crore proposal in line to continue the production of Prinaka rockets.
This move is to boost the Army’s power and reportedly more than 2,000 rockets for the Pinaka multi- barrel weapons system are likely to be produced.
The decision has been taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Source said that Defense Ministry proposed to add more fire power in Army, upgrading the capabilities of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).
At this time Army has needed atleast 2,000 of Pinaka launchers to equip its 10-12 regiments, reports added.
‘Pinaka’ is an area weapon system with a range of 40 km has undergone several tough tests since 1995, has already been inducted into the armed forces.
Reports further said that under the proposal, the govt has decided to invest Rs 15,000 crore in domestic military production which help to spare army from graft scams such as of foreign military hardware acquisition.
