Time magazine dubs PM as underachiever, Congress counters itA big disappointing blow raised in UPA-led Congress party when a media report showed that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has been remarked as an “underachiever” by a top US Time magazine.

Posting Mr. Singh on the cover page of its Asia edition with title of ‘The Underachiever – India needs a reboot’, the magazine says Mr. Singh appears “unwilling to stick his neck out” on reforms that will put the country back on the process of liberalisation seeking a growth path.

However, the edition will be published next week, but report said, the magazine claimed that from past three years, Mr. Singh was unable to handle his Cabinet ministry whether it is of his new or temporary portfolio at the finance ministry.

Beside this, doubts on country’s huge fiscal deficit and a falling rupee with decreasing economic growth has also revealed by US magazine along with Congress’s bow to corruption charges.

In a counter, referring to the issue, source said, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, “In the past eight years the UPA government headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has provided political stability, social harmony, internal cohesion, economic growth and a greater role in global affairs. This by no stretch of imagination is under achievement.”

Raising the opportunity, Opposition party came before and started comparing Times magazine remark on Singh with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who was also featured few time ago and the magazine remarked him to play a vital role in infrastructure development and progress to the country specially people of Gujarate.

“Definitely, he is not an achiever…. All that he has achieved is corruption, scam and bad governance…. He is an honest Prime Minister of the most corrupt government,” BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters.
