Social activist of Manipur, Irom Sharmila, a strong voice against the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), is going to produce before a Delhi court today.
Better known as the Iron Lady of Manipur, Sharmila has arrived in Delhi on Sunday, to appear in the Patiala House Court on alleged charges of attempt to suicide.
The activist has been on hunger strike for more than 12 years, demanding cancellation of controversial law, following that the court summoned her to attempt suicide case and protest against the AFSPA to Delhi 6 years ago, reports said.
She said that her fast was a protest to demonstrate without violence, not a suicide attempt.
“I am protesting by non-violence at my best level…I am sure the government will listen to me and repeal AFSPA,” she told reporters.
Attacking her State government, Sharmila praised J&K CM Omar Abdullah’s action over Afzal Guru’s execution and asked why her government to be mum on repeal of the AFSPA.
