After the Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan highlighted the issues of high cost medicines in Indian market, the concept of Generic medicines will be introduced in all government hospitals in the state from June 2012.

As per the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a generic drug is the same to or the bioequivalent of a brand name drug in dosage form, safety, strength, route of administration, quality, performance characteristics and intended use

However, as compared to chemically identical to branded medicines, the generic drugs will be available in the market at lower cost.

Further, Health Minister, Mr. Shetty said, “The decision to purchase generic medicines was taken by the state 18 months ago.”

On the other hand, the government could not launch the drugs with soon affect as it had already signed various rate contracts.

Shetty said, “These contracts have now come to an end. So, from now on, we will only purchase generic medicines.”
