Thousands of Egyptians marched in Cairo with Egyptian flags and green Islamist emblems on Saturday in support of President Mohamed Morsi’s constitution, the one who granted himself sweeping powers through a decree.
Calling Morsi’s opponents “enemies of God and Islam” , Muslim Brotherhood and its ultra-orthodox Salafi allies came forward with larger rallies to wash out amid opposition protests.
“The people support the president’s decision!” they chanted outside Cairo University, urged people to come out in support of Islamist law.
As per Morsi, his constitution is a temporary measure to speed Egypt’s democratic transition until the new constitution takes place, to prevent former regime-led courts from dissolving the assembly, as per source said.
It has been expected that Morsi’s constitution approved by an Islamist-dominated panel, is to be established with defined date for a referendum before the end of the year.
Surprisingly, major right of Women equality is missing in Egypt’s constitution, while no place for dictatorship, but set Islamic Shariah law at a top rank. However, if Morsi’s liberal, leftist, Christian and other opponents boycott the referendum, voting ‘No’ to draft , the constitution would pass anyway, as per decree.
According to reports, demonstrators held pro-constitution banners, read “Islam is coming”, “ to stability”, “Not to corruption”. Rival demonstrators threw stones after dark in Alexandria and the Nile Delta town of Al-Mahalla Al-Kobra.
On Friday , more than200,000 people gathered in Tahrir Square, the same place where last year’s revolution ended President Hosni Mubarak’s regime. They all were protesting against Morsi with slogans ‘Constitution: Void!’ ‘people want to bring down the regime’ , claiming him to pay gangs of thugs to beat up men who are taking part in the protests.
