After the matter of offering a bribe of 14 crores to General VK Singh to sanction the purchase of “sub-standard” trucks, this leakage of official communication is the second major issue. That treated as a biggest breach of national security, damaging the reputation of a 1.3 million strong Indian Army.

Under the huge pressure from opposition members and former Army chiefs over embarrassment issues, the UPA government asked Defence Ministry to set IB for probe the matter, inquire into leakage of the Army Chief’s letter to the media along with the bribery allegations made by him. Read more

The army chief has today named retired Lft Gen Tejinder Singh in the incident in which VK Singh was offered a bribe of Rs14 crore.

In regards to this, when media tried to approach Defense Minister AK Antony, he said, “I did not receive any written complaint at any stage.”

General VK Singh has recently said in an interview that he was offered a bribe of around Rs 14 crore by an equipment lobbyist as a move to have a tranche of 600 sub-standard vehicles of a tender made cleared for purchase.

Further, Army Chief told media that 7,000 of such vehicles are already being used by the Indian Army and had been sold in past many years at exorbitant prices.
