Presidential Polls: All eyes on Mamata Banerjee-Sonia Gandhi meet today

To make clear stand on the issue of Presidential poll nominee of UPA on Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature as the next President, Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi in seeking support, today meet with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

All eyes are set on this meet outcome. Though Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee emerges as the front-runner in the race for entering the Rashtrapati Bhavan, it won’t be easy for him among those trying to occupy this post.

According to sources report, UPA is much seeking to name senior leader Karan Singh as the President, but Left leader AB Bardhan and NCP chief Sharad Pawar have said “No”.

However, there is another close competitor Vice President Hamid Ansari from Congress side, but also Left Front and Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, supporting outside, are oppose on his candidature.

As per information concerned media persons, Mamata who will meet with Sonia today, is in strong favour of former West Bengal governor Gopal Gandhi and Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

Chances of announcing the name of Chatterjee by Mamta may be high as Gopal Gandhi’s candidature opposed by Congress and the Left Front.

After the meeting with Sonia, Mamata the second largest alley of UPA having 19 members in the Lok Sabha, will meet with Mulayam to discuss their one supporting Mukherjee’s candidature.

“We did have talks, but no names were discussed. I will be meeting Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday,” Mamata told reporters.

While asking by reporters about final lap over Polls, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari said, “The CWC has authorised Congress President Sonia Gandhi to take the final decision about the party’s Presidential candidate. Whenever there is some decision taken, we will tell the media.”
