Rail fare hike across all passenger classes after a decade

Railway Minister P.K. Bansal on Wednesday announced hike in train passenger fares from across the board, of all classes that come in effect from midnight of January 21.

Just a month ahead of presenting the Railway Budget, Bansal’s announcement of Fare hike has frustrated BJP which opposed the hike in train fares, called the move was “unacceptable” and “atrocious”.

But Mr. Bansal also promised that there would be no fare increase when the annual rail budget is presented in February.

The proposal will for AC 2-tier and AC first class passengers as they will have to pay hike fares.

The hike would be 2 paise per km in the basic fare for second class ordinary passengers while for non-suburban travel it will be 3 paise.

For AC Chair Car and AC first class passengers, the fare hike will be up to 10 paise more per km, First Class by 3 paise and AC Two Tier by 6 paise.

The Second Class Mail and Express trains Travelers, also sleeper classes passengers who had untouched for a decade, will also have to face increase fare that will be by 4 paise per km for second ordinary, while 6 paise foe sleeper class.
