In latest news, the Supreme Court is likely to hear a petition challenging the death penalty given to Khalistani Militant Devender Pal Singh Bhullar.
Meanwhile, Bhullar’s mercy plea was rejected by the court in 2011 after he was given death penalty in a 1993 car bombing case.
Further, the Khalistani Militant Devender Pal Singh Bhullar had been sentenced to death for triggering the 1993 Delhi car bomb attack that also killed 12 other people.
In addition, Bhullar had filed a mercy petition before the President of India, Pratibha Patil in January last year, which was rejected in May.
While January last year, he has been undergoing treatment for depression at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) for mental trauma and also moved to the supreme court for mercy on the ground of delay.
Though, getting no reason for the Centre as well as states to inordinately delay decision on mercy petitions, the bench said, “We want to know from the date mercy petitions reach the competent authority, what is being done.”
