2012 London Olympics: Gagan Narang opens India’s account in 10m air rifle

In the London Olympic, after Haryana Boxing champion Vijender Singh, Ace marksman Gagan Narang win a bronze medal in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event at the Royal Artillery Barracks.

Gagan who gave India its first 2012 Olympics medal in London on Monday, is an Air India employee, shot 103.1 for an aggregate of 701.1 in the nail-bitting 10-shot final and score 598 in the qualifying round in which he placed at third position.

In the first two rounds, Narang’s poor start fetched him 9.9 and 9.5 in the seventh and eighth attempts, but after that he strong up his will and collect 10.3 and 10.7 to get bronze against China’s Wang Tao who left behind Narang with 700.4.

The world’s No. 1 Italy’s Niccolo Campriani has beaten by Romania’s Moldoveanu Alin George who became the gold medalist, shot 103.1 in the final, scoring 702.1 aggregate. Campriani stood second with 701.5.

Another Indian athlete, Abhinav Bindra , a Beijing Games gold medallist who had qualified for round at London Olympic 2012, had out in the initial round with a dismal display.

Indian air rifle shooter, Narang had won four gold medals in the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games and also won four yellow metals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Narang who will be playing and fighting for two more upcoming events at the Games has offered a job of Group A level in the Sports Authority of India as equivalent to an IAS officer by the Sports Minister Ajay Maken.
