The opening of the 30th Olympic Games will be done today and around 10,000 athletes are taking part in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games, which are all set to kick off in London today.
But, there are five moments which will really make London 2012 historic Games. Here comes the five moments.
1. London-2012
London is going to host the Olympic Games for the third time and this is the only city in the world to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948. London was named as the host city on 6 July 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore. Other cities in the race was Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris.
2. Usain Bolt
Jamaican Usain Bolt was like a surprise to the world during the 2008 Beijing Games as he won three gold medals with new world records. He is the only athlete having records in Olympic and World Record in 100 metres, 200 metres and 4×100 metres relay. But this he will be facing tough fight from his own country man Yohan Blake.
3. Michael Phelps
He is an American swimmer with 16 Olympic medals under his belt. His medal tally includes 6 gold and 2 bronze at Athens in 2004 and 8 gold at Beijing in 2008. He stands just next to Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina in terms of total Olympic medal, who has 18 medals under his belt. We hope that Michael Phelps can overtake Larisa Latynina’s 18 medals record in London Olympic 2012.
4. Brazil football team
The national football team from Brazil is the most successful team in the history of world football with 5 World Cup wins. However, they have won silver in 1984 and 1988, and bronze in 1996 and 2008, and yet to win Olympic gold. Hope so that Brazilian football team will win the gold this year. With the likes of Neymar, Oscar, Lucas, and Alexandre Pato in their ranks, the Brazilians are the team to beat in London.
5. Oscar Pistorius
He is from South Africa and will take part in the 400m and the 4 x 400 m relay races. Oscae Pistorius is the first double amputee athlete to compete at the Olympics. He first took part in the able-bodied athletes in 2007. Though, a ruling by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) made him ineligible to take part in the events with able-bodied athletes in future, which included the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
