Zinc supplement can cut infant deaths: Study

The kids who are suffering from serious bacterial infections such as pneumonia and meningitis, zinc could be a wonder cure for them as a supplement along with antibiotics, as per latest study.

The study conducted in Delhi by the Department of Biotechnology under the Union Ministry of Science and Technology over 700 babies aged between seven and 120 days showed that by giving Zinc with antibiotics to babies, 40 per cent reduction in treatment failure and 43% in death among babies suffering from bacterial sepsis.

However this new tech to treat by Zinc available in meat, eggs, nuts, cheese, oysters and grains, is essential for normal growth of infants, could prove a big move in reduction of India’s infant mortality rate (IMR).

It has been reported that alone I in India, nearly one million neonatal deaths in every year are attributed to bacterial and other infections.

“Zinc is an accessible, low-cost intervention that could add to the effect of antibiotic treatment and lead to substantial reductions in infant mortality, particularly in developing countries where millions of children die from serious infections every year,” Shinjini Bhatnagar led the research told reporters.

Moreover, still there is no exact record of the effect of supplemental zinc, further inquiry has bee carried out, but it has been declared that zinc therapeutic is beneficial for Children of less than 5 years suffering from diarrhoea and pneumonia.
