High alert in Punjab, curfew in Gurdaspur after youngster dies
As per latest reports, a day after President Pratibha Patil deferred hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana, main accused in the killing of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, tension has suddenly increased in some parts of the state while curfew was clamped in Gurdaspur city after the death of a Sikh youth Jaspal Singh, reportedly in a police firing.
It was said in reports that police opened fire after a clash between two groups during the Punjab bandh. Shiv Sena had called for the bandh to protest the president’s order on Balwant Singh. Read more
Centre stays hanging of Balwant Singh Rajoana
In a big crack-down on Balwant Singh Rajoana case, Centre ordered stay on the hanging of Rajoana, the main accused in the killing of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh.
Earlier, the Chandigarh sessions court yesterday had rejected superintendent Lakhwinder Singh Jakhar’s petition and issued a contempt of court notice on him, Patiala Jail superintendent however always said that he was “unable and disabled in law” to accept the death warrant of Balwant Singh Rajoana.
Superintendent Jakhar even told in media that he would move the Punjab and Haryana high court against the order. Read more
Punjab bandh to support Rajoana, CM Parkash Singh Badal to meet PM, President
The Punjab state has been on a very high alert today as a one-day long state-wide bandh has been called yesterday by several Sikh groups in the state to protest against a Chandigarh court order that Balwant Singh Rajoana, main accused in the killing of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, be hanged as scheduled on March 31.
Reports have said that around 60,000 Punjab police personnel including 15 companies of para-military forces have been deployed in the various parts of the state to avoid any mis-happening ahead of Balwant Singh Rajoana’s execution.
Punjab government has fixed prohibitory orders under Section 144 banning gathering of five or more persons were at various places in view of the bandh. Read more
