Tamil Nadu Express fire 35 kills, several injured

Today early morning, a fire broke out in a coach of the Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu Express near Nellore, in Andhra Pradesh, killing atleast 35 passengers and 25 reported to be injured.

In the second class reserved compartment, S-11 of Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu express a total of 72 passengers were traveling. Major reason is said to be a short circuit that blew the fire in coach S-11.

The official said, the fire broke out around 5.30 a.m., minutes after train left Nellore railway station, about 450 km from Hyderabad. 26 passengers were rescued and number of dead passengers may be added more, while injured have been admitted in the local hospital.

“There was a short circuit near the toilet and the train was moving at a speed of 110 kms per hour. It was going to Chennai from Delhi. People were not able to come out immediately,” Nellore Collector Sridhar said.

The whole compartment caught fire in so fast that the passengers could not come out from coach. To rescue the passengers, authorities had used other edge of the coach.

However, the dead bodies have been so badly buried that it is difficult for authorities to identify them.

It has been said that around 15 passengers are believed to have jumped down from the burning compartment to safe their lives, while those sleeping on the upper berths have been died.

There is much hustle and bustle at the site, Chennai senior officers have been approached to Nellore and observing the operations and ambulances rushed to the site for emergency shift injured to hospital.
