Wikipedia enables HTML 5, open video submissions

Now, the world No. 1 online encyclopedia, Wikipedia is going to transform into a new level of usability with HTML5 format, offering users’ ability to post contents along with videos.

The latest launch of TimeMediaHandler, a new HTML5-based video player is the result of long four years working of Wikipedia, lets millions and millions of entry of so far text-based pages linked to video content that will very soon support for mobile.

Wikipedia’s new launch was initially introduced in 2008, being partnered with HTML 5 open source video platform Kaltura and Google to create the TimeMediaHandler, due to some tech problems, the project was postponed.

“A new video player has been enabled on Wikipedia and its sister sites, and it comes with the promise of bringing free educational videos to more people, on more devices, in more languages,” Wikimedia Foundation said  as per source.

Meanwhile, new project offers registered users to upload, edit video or any work related to video will now carried on Wikis, supporting full flexibility in the audio, video, closed captioning and other text.

Wait is just to watch how the worldwide editors’ communities will react on Wikis’s TimeMediaHandler launch, one of the biggest and longest anticipated project.

It has been said that presently just 15,000 videos has been hosted by Wikipedia, hitting the support of HTML5 based WebM, video that is built specifically for the web and users can easily add free-licensed content to Wikipedia.
