RSP closes two units after pollution control board directive

The Pollution Control Board has made the order to Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to shutting down its two units, one is of sinter and another is a boiler in its captive power plant (CPP).

Such warning also had given to RSP in December last month and taking no effective action over this by RSP the board has rejecting its two units that would seem to generate 40% loss in steel production.

However G S Prasad, RSP CEO made request to Pollution Control Board to remove its plea and allow them to run Plants. He also confined that modernization work is completed in SP-I to modify micro-fines, replace both the exhaust systems, placing double-cone, double-acting valves and increase the hearth layer thickness to reduce emissions.

Although RSP tried to use calcined lime in plants that will be taken up shortly in the process and also many improvement steps in both the units has followed that help to cut down pollution affects, but as per PCB, closure of the MP Boiler-3 would be made then it limited the RSP to allow just about 120 mw of power generated from its other unit.

PCB has put a condition in front of RSP that any request of it regarding the discharge of step against running process of Plants will be accepted if it the latter obeyed Pollution Control’s order.

As per Board’s decision, the pollution control board member secretary Sidhant Das said, “The RSP said it has already started using high grade coal and showed the results recorded from December 24. We are sending an expert team to Rourkela on Tuesday for physical verification of RSP’s claims. The findings of the team will be examined before taking further decision.”
