In Myanmar, Parliamentary by- polls started at 6 a.m. on Sunday morning with contesting in 9 regions or states of 157 candidates out of whom 17 are from political parties and 7 individuals.
Around 6.8 million voters will cast their votes for 45 constituencies, Kawhmu, Thonkwa, Dagon Seikkan, Mingala Taungnyunt, Hlegu and Mayangon are the six constituencies from which seven parties ,six are new, will participate in contest as representatives of House in Yangon region for six vacant seats in it.
Opposition leader, the Nobel peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, will stand for first time in Parliamentary by elections, along with 43 members of her National League for Democracy party for 48 vacant seats.
Yangon is the formal capital of Myanmar from which Ms. Kyi contesting for seat in Kawhmu. She was the lady who kept under house arrest during Myanmar’s two general elections in 1990 and 2010.
Because of Militant power, Kyi’s party NLD boycotted November 2010 election, saying the rules were unfair, and was stripped of its status as a legal political party. Suu Kyi was released days after the vote.
However powered over 664-seat of parliament by the military backed party, there is no chances of NLD and its opposition allies to win all the seats they are contesting.
According to Source, the regime wants victory of Suu Kyi in the polls. Because it would symbolize its reformist programme legitimacy toward national reconciliation and also quit of the Western powers into easing economic sanctions.
In the list of contesting parties, the second one is the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and after it, the National League for Democracy (NLD) comes as the main opposite rival, participating for all six constituencies in the Yangon region.
Moreover, amid security for observing the fair elections, Indian Government has deployed two experienced election commission officials, including India’s Ambassador to Myanmar VS Sheshadri, Assam Chief Election Commissioner Maninder Singh and Manipur Chief Election Officer PC Lawmkunga.
