Telenor, Tata Teleservices in talks to merge Indian biz

Norway’s largest telecom operator, Telenor is in talks with Tata Teleservices to merge its Indian operations seeking to get its targeted point in the Indian mobile phone market over 900 million customers.

As per close sources with direct knowledge of the matter, Telenor which seeks to take a majority stake in the merged entity would become the top fifth mobile phone company in India, source said.

Meanwhile, India’s Tata Group will cut off its stake in unlisted Tata Teleservices and Japan’s NTT Docomo which have 26% stake in Tata Teleservices,will remain holding its position in  share market in the new entity, reports further added.

However, still no company has to come in front of media for commitment, is expected to be because of hurdles of regulatory and government as this month faith of Telenor will have decided by cabinet.

Telenor’s decision to combined with Tata Teleservices comes after its dispute with India’s Unitech due to lose of its licenses during cancellation of all 122 permits by Supreme Court in February over 2G scam.

Recently Telenor has won six permits of Indian telecom circles in 2G spectrum auction with 34 million customers, and now waiting is for its next step in Indian market.
