As per reports, thousands of Tibetans joined at the main temple when Jamphel Yeshi (26-year-old), a Tibetan who died after setting himself on fire in New Delhi, was cremated like a martyr by Tibetan exiles at McLeodganj on Friday.
However, the Dalai Lama, who was present in the town, but did not reach the temple to take part in the cremation of Jamphel Yeshi, while Tibetan prime minister-in-exile Lobsang Sangay was in Japan.
Reports have said that huge number of people gathered at the cremation and many of them were backed by the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), said to be as one of the leading pro-independence groups, around 5,000 Tibetans came to the streets, resulting a high traffic jams in McLeodganj.
In support of Jamphel Yeshi cremation, some shopkeeper kept their shops closed for the whole day.
The Tibetan community was in very anger due to the death of Jamphel Yeshi, who sacrificed his life for the cause. The body of 26-years-old was brought to McLeodganj city under a huge people rush from Kargra town. Tibetan youths had put up Tibetan flags on their bikes and writer Tibetan logos on their cars.
People of the town are looking for full support from the Indian government as well as International society for the Tibetan cause. In addition, they condemned the arrest of Tibetan people in the New Delhi.
While talking to media, welfare officer of Tibetans, Sonam Dorjee said, “Arrest of Tibetans in Delhi was really unfortunate. We need the global support at this particular stage when our people are committing immolations.”
Further, the Tibetan parliament-in-exile’s speaker Penpa Tsering said, “Hu Jintao is responsible for two more lives since he came to India. The question is how many more Tibetan lives have to be lost before the issue will be resolved.”
During the absence of the Dalai Lama, his foreigner followers said that the spiritual leader was against immolations as it was a violent way of protest.
