Once again, remarks made by Virender Sehwag have created headlines, but the cricketer said that media presented his statement in a wrong way. Earlier, Sehwag said that MS Dhoni’s captaincy alone didn’t win India the World Cup was perceived as a loaded one.
The opener from the Indian team was talking to media during the opening of the Saba Karim-Genesis Pro-Cricket Centre in Greater Noida. A media-person asked Sehwag to react on MS Dhoni’s 31st birthday and his captaincy.
Since 2008, difference between Virender Sehwag and MS Dhoni is out in media and number of time such news hits the headlines.
Talking to media, Sehwag said, “I don’t know what others feel, but by the time Dhoni took over as captain, we had a strong team. His captaincy alone didn’t win World Cup for India.”
He also added, “We had a very strong team already, so we won different World Cups, T20 and limited-overs. If you have a good team, you win. It’s simple. Australia had a good team and they won three World Cups as well, and it was not because of their captaincy. They had great players. And so, I’ll say that the Indian team backed by Dhoni’s captaincy won the World Cup.”
According to Sehwag, he has played almost all the matches on IPL 2012, and there are no issues on his fitness.
When asked to Sehwag about Sachin’s decision to opt out from Sri Lanka tour, he said, “A player of his stature should be allowed to pick and choose which series he wants to play.”
He said, “Before I became a prominent member of the senior team I have also gone for ‘A’ tours. Some people get runs on this kind of tours and some don’t. That does not mean that those who fail are not good enough. The best part is that you can make mistakes and learn from it, try to rectify in your domestic cricket and come back stronger.”
