Pakistan blocks cellphone services

On the special and important 9th and 10th days of Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar, Pakistan govt has blocked all mobile services across the cities for more than two days, seeking to prevent Sunni extremist groups from detonating bombs using mobiles.

Threatening from Wednesday’s suicide attacks in Rawalpindi and Karachi, the mobile services are being blocked in Karachi, Quetta and a sector of Islamabad which would be followed to more than 50 cities on two days.

Muhharam is most important to Shiite Muslims, and for their safety the action has been taken by Pak. “The suspension of cellphone services will begin at 6 a.m. Saturday and run through the next day,” Interior Minister Rehman Malik told reporters, adding pillion riding has also banned across the country.

Wednesday’s attacks had been triggered by Taliban Pakistan terror group which claimed responsibility for attacks, killed more than 16 people and several dozens were wounded.
