The Tamil Nadu coast faced the cyclonic storm, ‘Thane’, today that resulting in death of seven persons.
This Cyclonic storm has made a huge destruction in Cuddalore and the neighboring Union Territory of Puduchery which remained cut-off from the nearby districts of the state.
In an Official report, the death of six persons was because of wall collapse and electrocution and a 45-year old man died in house collapse in Puducherry.
Beside a huge damage, the transportation suffered a lot. Train services from southern Tamil Nadu and flights to international destinations by private carriers including to Kuwait and Malaysia from Chennai were cancelled.
The rescue operations were in full swing in the union territory and uprooted trees were being removed from the roads, the Puduchery District Collector S B Deepak Kumar reportedly told media.
Broken glass from street lights, shards from window panes and other debris remained suspended on inundated roads. Mobile services experienced outage only to be restored much later in the day. The Communication network was mostly affected by this and around 5000 houses of fishermen had been damaged, The District Collector Amuthavalli said.
“The very severe cyclonic storm ‘THANE’ over southwest Bay of Bengal moved further westward and crossed north Tamil Nadu coast between Cuddalore and Puducherry between 6.30 and 7.30 AM today,” the regional weather office stated in its statement.
On basis of weather records, the wind speeds of upto 140 kph was recorded during this period and it had now weakened into a severe cyclonic storm and lay about 30 km west of Cuddalore and 35 km southwest of Puduchery.
Due to this system effect, there would be heavy rainfall at most places and very heavy falls at a few places over north coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 12 hours and over north interior Tamil Nadu during next 24 hours.
From Monday morning heavy rains continued in Chennai that raising the sea level and the height of the tidal waves. Cyclone Thane brought back memories of the 2004 Tsunami for the residents of Cuddalore that killing thousands of people and the main thing is of its happening in the end of December.
However Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu was the most affected by the cyclone storm. Also this make difficult for National Disaster Response Force and Fire and Rescue Services to reach cyclone hit fishing hamlets the reason was of damaged roads.
