Today, the Chief Election Commissioner S Y Quraishi with other Election Commissioners is inspecting over the entire poll schedule to give it final touch. The schedule may be announced soon.
Actual issue is to announce the schedule for Assembly elections to five poll-bound states of Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh.
However from a report, in Punjab, Manipur and Uttarakhand, Assemblies completes in mid-March, the 40-member Goa Assembly on June 14 and the 403-member UP Assembly completes ends on May 20.
In the meantime, the Election Commission held a meeting with Union Home Secretary R K Singh on the discussion of holding the polls for all five states Goa, Manipur, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh altogether, scheduling the polls and the availability of paramilitary forces.
Moreover in his report, a source indicated, “The announcement of the schedule can come any day now. The EC will need an estimated 80,000 central paramilitary personnel to supplement state policemen for the polls. The Home Ministry is learnt to have said that it could spare 700-800 companies of paramilitary forces for this purpose.”
The estimation regarding five poll-bound states is to in early February. Such decision regarding Scheduling of Polls in February may be good for UPA. Though there are ten vacancies come up in the Rajya Sabha in April.
All attention is on UP where a five – phase election is to be held in February. The main point is to know what will Mayawati try to do for save her turf and on the other hand the poll fight will be held between Congress and Ajit Singh’s RLD party in the state.
And on the basis of inductions of polls, the BSP should secure eight vacancies on basis of its present strength and if there will be opposite reaction of UPA, then this may be give advantage to opposing party in the Rajya Sabha
At this time, the EC is trying to set the schedule for polling and at least 45 days are required after the notification of polls to the first polling date and will announce the five poll-bound schedules on Today at 4:30pm.
