TRAI warns mobile operators for delay in number portability

There are two Telecom companies whose names are to be enlisted in the violating of MNP norms. The Telecom Regulatory allegedly Authority of

India (Trai) has taken legal action against two largest companies of telecommunication, Bharti and Vodafone, for ruling out the mobile number portability (MNP) norms.

A Trai official informed, “We have received their (Bharti and Vodafone) responses. The matter is under examination. After analyzing, we will decide our course of action.”

From November 25, 2010, because the MNP service was made nationwide, and all phone users were allowing to use any operator without changing numbers.

Apart of it, there would be a condition that customer are required to have cleared all of their outstanding bills before making an application.

But the regulator has received complaints from the users that Bharti and Vodafone has rejected their request for MNP, and as a result both service providers issued showcause notices.

According to an official report, a team of Trai officials has been send to the telecom operators’ offices for investigating the rejection of MNP request by subscriber and this issue has been brought in front of telecom ministry.

“The department of telecommunications (DoT) may also take necessary action at its end,” the officials said.

Although Trai reported that 893 MNP requests have been rejected, reason is that when subscriber put a request for porting he may face so many following norms and promotional STD or SMS packs are often cited as reasons for rejection of MNP requests.

In fact Trai had specified in their issued direction on May 24, 2011, to service providers that rejection on the premise of contractual obligation can be done in case of postpaid connections or corporate connections.

A source reported that at least 23.1 million users have requested for porting till October, and around 5 million have not been carried out.

Meanwhile, TRAI is trying to be taken strict action against the licensor to ensure compliance.
